Annoucements for the Week of August 18th

Good afternoon, Trojans!

I hope you had a restful weekend. There are a lot of announcements this week, so please read through carefully.

AR Update

• 25% of AR goals are due today. 50% of AR goals are due Mon. 8/25
• The following students are below 25% as of 9:30am:
• 4, 10
• 2, 3, 8, 19* is reading a longer book and has until 8/25 to meet their goal
• Over 25%:
• 1, 7, 11, 12, 14, 16, 22, 23, 25, 27
• Over 50%:
• 6, 15, 17, 21, 24
• Over 75%:
• 9, 5, 13, 29, 30, 31
• Over 100%:
• 18, 20, 28, 29
• 1st Quarter due dates:
• 75% due Tues., Sept. 2
• 100% due Wed., Sept. 10
• Students not meeting AR benchmarks will be reading during recess time to catch up on reading. Please make sure your child reads for at least 30 minutes each night to keep up with their reading progress.

Parent Math Workshop:

·       Thank you for all who came to the Parent Math Workshop on Thursday! We hope that you found the time and information valuable. Like we said, we plan on doing one a quarter. Stay tuned for more information on the second quarter workshop!

Edmodo HW:

• Each week your child will be asked to respond to a question on Edmodo regarding what they have learned that week in reading. Students will be engaging in online discussions using Edmodo. Your child's username and password is written on the front page of their planner.
• We have changed the due dates/times!
• The first post is due every Wednesday morning at 8am.
• The response to a classmate's post is due every Friday morning at 8am.
• If your child does not have access to a computer or internet, please make arrangements with me to use the computers at school.

Big 5 HW:

• If your child misses any problems from the previous night, they need to make necessary corrections at home as homework.
• Your child should be bringing home their math spiral each night. This is their textbook and will help them on their homework.

Reading Journals:

• ​​In effort to not be swamped with grading reading journals over the weekend, I am changing how the students will be turning their journals each week. Each student will be assigned a day and that will be the day that their journal will be due each week. This will help to grade the journals a little bit at a time, rather than all at once. Note that I am changing it to the students turning in a journal letter each week. I noticed that students were waiting until the last minute to complete the journals. Therefore, I decided to have it be a weekly assignment like in previous years.  
• Please ask your student what color group they are in. Below are the days and what group is due that day.
• Green- Mondays
• Blue- Tuesdays
• Red- Wednesdays
• Yellow- Thursdays
• Orange- Fridays

Social Studies:

• Thank you for all your support with the presentations! They were awesome and I was very impressed.
• On Wednesday, we will be introducing our first independent project. It is called the Facebook Explorer Project. Students will be using textbooks, books, and videos to research about their assigned explorer. The project guidelines and resources will be posted on my website (http://missmorales801.blogspot.com).  Just like the last project, your student will have time in class to work on the project.

Parent/ Teacher Conferences:

·       Yes, it is almost time for Parent/ Teacher Conferences. Parent/Teacher Conferences will be from September 11- 19. Please note that for those days we will be on minimum day schedule, which means students will be dismissed at 1:15pm. I look forward to meeting with you!

·        I will be sending home today a sign-up sheet as well as reminders to those of you who signed up at Back-to-School Night.

o   Please remember to fill out your top three choices. If it is shaded in, it means that time slot is already taken.

 ​​Scholastic Orders:

·       Last week, I sent home the first book orders for the year. They are due by Friday 8/29 in order to ensure they arrive before we go on break.

o   There is a larger selection online of books for all different reading levels as well e-books, books in Spanish and even books for adults.

·       This is how I am able to get restock my library as well as get new books for our class. If we get a class order over $300, we will earn 10,000 bonus points enabling us to get up to 100-200 free books this year. Each child that orders will also get a coupon for a free book in October's order. :)

• If you haven't emailed me your letter about your child, please turn these in ASAP.
