Edmodo HW:
  • Each week your child will be asked to respond to a question on Edmodo regarding what they have learned that week in reading. Students will be engaging in online discussions using Edmodo. Your child's username and password is written on the front page of their planner.
  • We have changed the due dates/times!
  • The first post is due every Wednesday morning at 8am.
  • The response to a classmate's post is due every Friday morning at 8am.
  • If your child does not have access to a computer or internet, please make arrangements with me to use the computers at school.
Big 5 HW:
  • If your child misses any problems from the previous night, they need to make necessary corrections at home as homework.
  • Your child should be bringing home their math spiral each night. This is their textbook and will help them on their homework.
Reading Journals:
  • In effort to not be swamped with grading reading journals over the weekend, I am changing how the students will be turning their journals each week. Each student will be assigned a day and that will be the day that their journal will be due each week. This will help to grade the journals a little bit at a time, rather than all at once. Note that I am changing it to the students turning in a journal letter each week. I noticed that students were waiting until the last minute to complete the journals. Therefore, I decided to have it be a weekly assignment like in previous years.
    • Please ask your student what color group they are in. Below are the days and what group is due that day.
      • Green- Mondays
      • Blue- Tuesdays
      • Red- Wednesdays
      • Yellow- Thursdays
      • Orange- Fridays
Social Studies:
  • Thank you for all your support with the presentations! They were awesome and I was very impressed.
  • On Wednesday, we will be introducing our first independent project. It is called the Facebook Explorer Project. Students will be using textbooks, books, and videos to research about their assigned explorer. The project guidelines and resources will be posted on my website (http://missmorales801.blogspot.com).  Just like the last project, your student will have time in class to work on the project.
  • If you have any questions, please email me atJennifer.morales@cvesd.org
Parent/ Teacher Conferences:
·       Yes, it is almost time for Parent/ Teacher Conferences. Parent/Teacher Conferences will be from September 11- 19. Please note that for those days we will be on minimum day schedule, which means students will be dismissed at 1:15pm. I look forward to meeting with you!
·        I will be sending home today a sign-up sheet as well as reminders to those of you who signed up at Back-to-School Night.

Scholastic Book Orders for August 2014

As a 5th grade teacher, one of the most important parts of my job is to build a love of reading in my students. Helping them find books they enjoy puts them on their way toward being critical readers and writers, which is essential for school success. That is why I use Scholastic Reading Club in my class. It makes it easy for you to choose books that your child will love, at just the right reading level for him or her – and at unbeatable prices.

I sent home the very first Scholastic Book Club order on Thursday. If you haven’t ordered from Scholastic before, please consider doing so this year. Their prices are very reasonable and the quality is excellent.  Did you know that every day is a “tax-free holiday” when it comes to scholastic book club orders? You never pay sales tax, and you don’t even pay shipping and handling.

I love ordering books for our classroom from Scholastic; the company is very education oriented and provides many freebies for classrooms. This month they have a wonderful deal! If teachers can get together a $300 order they will give the class 10,000 bonus points which can be used to buy books and classroom materials. That many bonus points works out to anywhere from 100-200 free books for the classroom! If we reach our goal of $300, I will let each child who placed an order get one free book from an upcoming book order.

Last year, I gave out over $300 in book coupons to students to earn free books. We were able to do that because of the support of parents buying books through Scholastic (and all the extra bonus points that we earned for FREE)!

Here's how it works:
  • SIGN UP at www.Scholastic.com/bookclubs. On the main page, click REGISTER, then click, “I’m a parent,” to register for your own username and password.

  • When prompted, enter the one-time Class Activation Code, LZQWN, this code ensures that your order is sent to me.

  • SELECT the books you'd like to order from over 500 titles available online and take advantage of online-only specials and discounts.

  • SEND your order to me online by the due date. Books will be delivered directly to our classroom, as always.

Ordering online is fast, easy, and secure. Plus our whole class benefits thanks to the FREE books we'll earn with every parent online order.

Please return/place online book orders by the due date. Return your order (if you choose not to order online) to me with a CHECK made out to SCHOLASTIC BOOKS by Friday August 29th.

Lastly, to complement our AR program at McMillin Elementary, Scholastic has made it easy to purchase books based on AR levels. This will ensure that your child is reading books that are just-right for him/her at his/her reading level. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions about AR. Below you will find a list of recommended books.

Please contact me if you would like personal recommendations for your child.
Happy Reading,

Jennifer Morales (jennifer.morales@cvesd.org)
